Budget first

On the Amalfi Coast the gap between a boat seat and your own hull is the whole budget.

Start here

Everyone comes for the same handful of Amalfi Coast days.

The boat, the town, the island, the trail, the kitchen and the last hour of light. Most trips are built out of these six, and each one books differently.

The coast road

The SS163 does not let you rush.

Fifty kilometres, more than a thousand bends and a lane and a half of it, threaded along a cliff between Positano and Vietri sul Mare. Every town on it is a different day out — here they are in the order you would meet them driving east.

Let somebody else drive it →

On the water

From the road you see the Amalfi Coast. From the water you see the towns.

Half of this coastline has no road to it at all: the fjord at Furore, the arch caves, the shingle coves under Praiano that only open to a hull. A boat day is not a sightseeing extra here, it is the way the place is meant to be read.

Across the water

Capri is a boat ride from Positano, not a separate holiday.

The crossing is under an hour from most of the coast, which is why the island fills by eleven and empties again at five. The boats that leave early get the Faraglioni to themselves and the Blue Grotto before the queue forms — and the ones that go round the island beat the town every time.

At the table

On the Amalfi Coast, lunch is a terrace above the water you swam in.

The kitchens up here run on four things: lemons the size of your fist, mozzarella that was in a bucket this morning, tomatoes off the terrace and whatever came out of the boat. The classes are small, they nearly all end in a long lunch, and the good ones are in a farmhouse rather than a hotel function room.

Only here

Fifty kilometres of cliff, and three things you cannot do anywhere else.

Boat trips and cooking classes exist all over Italy. The high trail, the terraced lemons and the Vietri kilns belong to this coastline and nowhere else.

The high trail

The Path of the Gods

Bomerano to Nocelle, most of it around 500 metres above the sea with nothing between you and the water but air and terraced vines. It is not a hard walk, but it is exposed, unshaded and ends with roughly 1,500 steps down into Positano — which is why almost everyone starts at the Agerola end and lets the bus do the climbing.

The Sfusato Lemon

The lemons on these cliffs are sfusato amalfitano: long, thick-skinned, sweet enough to eat in slices. They grow on terraces held up by dry stone walls built over centuries, reached by steps rather than tracks, and much of the crop still comes down on somebody’s shoulders. The tastings end in limoncello because there is nothing else to do with that much peel.

The eastern end

Vietri Ceramics

Vietri sul Mare sits where the coast road finally lets go, and it has been firing tin-glazed ceramics since the 1500s. The yellow, green and blue lemons and donkeys on doorways all the way back to Positano are made in this town. The workshops are small, hands-on and take one table at a time.

Plan backwards

The bookings the Amalfi Coast will not sell you on the day.

Most of this coast can be arranged over breakfast. These four cannot — they run on hull counts, sea state, timed tickets and an August that fills weeks ahead.

  1. 01Amalfi Coast Private Boat TourOne hull, one day. When a boat is taken there is no second one behind it.
  2. 02Capri & Blue Grotto Small Group Full-Day Boat Tour from PositanoThe grotto only opens when the sea is flat, and a small fleet of rowing boats does all the ferrying.
  3. 03Pompeii Guided Walking TourTimed entry slots and a daily visitor cap. Turning up at the gate in July is not a plan.
  4. 04Coast and Capri Boat Trip with Limoncello TastingAugust crossings fill days ahead, and the small-group boats go first.
When the sea gets up

A swell shuts the Amalfi Coast boats down. It does not shut the day down.

Wind out of the south-west and the hydrofoils stop, the coves close and every skipper stays in the harbour. That is the morning to be inland and indoors: a farmhouse kitchen, a potter’s wheel in Vietri, a cellar in the hills behind Tramonti, or the ruins up the bay where the weather is somebody else’s problem.
